Safety Tips for Wiring a Ceiling Fan

Before you begin the process of wiring and installing a ceiling fan or learning how to replace a ceiling fan, it’s important to review the safety tips in order to avoid shocking yourself, or worse. It’s vital that you deactivate your main circuit breaker to disconnect the flow of electricity.

Shutting down the flow of energy through the circuit is not your only defense from harm. This does NOT deactivate the lugs, which means that you are dealing with wiring from a live electrical source. It’s of utmost importance to use good judgment and tread carefully when dealing with electrical wiring of any kind.

Call a professional electrician experienced in wiring ceiling fans at the first sign of concern or if you are unsure of what to do with ceiling fan wiring at any point throughout your ceiling fan installation process.

The wires on your ceiling fan can sometimes be different colors than your house’s wiring, and it’s important before taking on the project of wiring a ceiling fan yourself that you familiarize yourself with the colors of each wire.

Colors of Your Household Wiring

  • Black: Hotwire leading to the switch.
  • White: Neutral wire that completes the electrical circuit.
  • Copper or Green: Ground wire that prevents power surges.
  • Blue: Optional 2nd switch wire.
  • Red: Optional wall switch wire.

How to Wire a Ceiling Fan

If you are installing a ceiling fan and handling the process of wiring the ceiling fan, we have the step-by-step guide you need to get the job done.

Step 1: Attach the Bracket and Fan to the Ceiling

  1. Turn the power off from the circuit box.
  2. Review the instruction manual for your ceiling fan.
  3. Identify each wire coming out of your ceiling unit.
  4. Screw brackets for the ceiling fan into the ceiling, with the wires hanging down through the center.
  5. Slide the ceiling fan into the bracket and hang it.

Step 2: Attach the Ceiling Fan Wires

  1. Remove plastic caps on the ends of the wires.
  2. Strip the wire ends with a stripping tool, at about 2 inches at the end of the wires. If copper wires are already exposed, skip this step for that color wire.
  3. Twist the copper, stripped ends of the two neutral white wires together– one being from the fan itself and one from your ceiling– to complete the circuit of your fan.
  4. Connect the green wires together– one can be found on the fan, the other on the fan bracket you just attached to the ceiling. Keep the green and copper wires from your ceiling alone for now.
  5. For ceiling fans with one switch, attach the black and blue fan wires together.
  6. Now, connect the two green wires from the fan to the green or copper ground wire in the ceiling.
  7. Saving your hot wires for last, connect the blue and black connected wires to the black hotwire in the ceiling.
  8. Replace plastic caps over the copper, exposed ends of each wire connection until fully secure.

Step 3: Complete the Ceiling Fan Installation

  1. Tuck all of the wire connections into the ceiling bracket.
  2. Screw the faceplate of the fan onto the bracket.
  3. Turn on the power from your circuit breaker box.
  4. Check your wall switch to see if your fan runs properly. If it does, congratulations, you’ve successfully wired your ceiling fan!
  5. If your fan does not operate properly, turn off the circuit breaker box power again, and recheck your wiring connections and try again.
